Grass Roots Gay Rights Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary this year! In that time, we have grown from a small group of friends who wanted to assist in the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s to our position today as a San Francisco non-profit foundation that promotes a happy, healthy and connected LGBTQ Bay Area community. We fulfill that mission by providing unrestricted funding to other non-profits that are aligned with our purpose. For the last 8 years, we have given away $200,000 per year to 4 large beneficiaries and smaller donations to another 8 non-profits. We will reach our $3 millionth dollar in giving this year.
The Foundation is a fully volunteer organization and those volunteers provide the passion and commitment that make it possible for us to make our grants. Each year a team of 25 energized people starts planning in January and their work culminates in September with our primary event, a fund-raising dance party that is the hottest ticket in San Francisco. We are thrilled to be able to give away 100% of the general admission ticket proceeds from that party to the beneficiaries for that year.
Since we are fervently committed to grass roots issues, we have tackled in our history homelessness, health, social justice, arts funding, hospice care and aging – to name some of our impact. I am honored to be involved for the last 13 years, having served as President of the Board and now as a Board member. We are delightedly planning our next 30 years!
