Q. Have you recently assessed your 2009 property value? What can you do if you feel your home has been overvalued?

A. You can appeal the decision.

  • The official California information source is the Property Tax division of the Board of Equalization. www.boe.ca.gov
  • If your County Assessor has reduced your assessed value, you can still appeal.
  • To appeal an assessment, submit the Application for Changed Assessment form, BOE-305-AH. The appeal window is generally July 2, 2009 to September 15, 2009.
  • Assessors generally rely on comparable sales. A source for sales data is MLS listings.
  • Comparable sales must be before April 1, 2009 and within your neighborhood.
  • Counties utilize a third-party “Appeals Board” to decide the outcome. You have the right to attend the hearing by yourself or with legal representation.
