Q. Have you recently assessed your 2009 property value? What can you do if you feel your home has been overvalued?
A. You can appeal the decision.
The official California information source is the Property Tax division of the Board of Equalization. www.boe.ca.gov
If your County Assessor has reduced your assessed value, you can still appeal.
To appeal an assessment, submit the Application for Changed Assessment form, BOE-305-AH. The appeal window is generally July 2, 2009 to September 15, 2009.
Assessors generally rely on comparable sales. A source for sales data is MLS listings.
Comparable sales must be before April 1, 2009 and within your neighborhood.
Counties utilize a third-party “Appeals Board” to decide the outcome. You have the right to attend the hearing by yourself or with legal representation.
